Board Members
Under the Dental Practice Act 2001, the Board consists of 12 members.
- Five are to be dentists elected in accordance with the regulations by dentists, and
- Seven are to be appointed by the Governor and are to comprise:
| (i) |
a person nominated by the Minister being an officer of the Department of Health or an employee of a public health organisation.
|
| (ii) |
a registered dentist nominated by the Minister, being a registered dentist involved in the tertiary education of persons for qualifications.
|
| (iii) |
a registered dentist nominated by the Minister of the Minister’s own choosing.
|
| (iv) |
a registered dental auxiliary nominated by the Minister of the Minister’s own choosing.
|
| (v) |
two persons (not being registered dental care providers) nominated by the Minister to represent the community.
|
| (vi) |
a legal practitioner nominated by the Minister. |
The Term of office is for a period of four years, except in the case of an appointment made to fill a casual vacancy when the appointment is for the unexpired portion of the four year period.
The current term of appointment for Board members expires on the 31 July, 2010.

President - Dr John Lockwood BDS, FICD
Dr Lockwood graduated from the University of Sydney in 1977 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. He is a general practitioner in Hornsby, NSW. He is a member of the following professional organisations: Australian Dental Association, International College of Dentists, Academy Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is a past Councillor of the New South Wales Branch of the Australian Dental Association. He has been a member of the Dental Board of NSW Complaints Committee from 1994 to 2006, and was appointed President of the Board effective 7 November 2007. Dr Lockwood was appointed to the Australian Dental Council in 2008 and is a member of the Uniformity Committee. He has been a Health Care Complaints committee reviewer, a member of the NSW Health workforce committee and a past President of the New South Wales Branch of the Australian Dental Association. He has served on past and present committees on matters relating to ethics, education, registration, qualifications, health funds, advertising, curriculum, professional indemnity, and various dental groups and associations.

Dr John W Dale AO Adj Associate Professor University of Sydney, BDS, MDS(Sydney), DDS(Tor), LLB(NSW), FRACDS, FICD
Dr Dale is a general dentist in private practice. He is a former President of the Australian Dental Council and New South Wales Branch of the Australian Dental Association. He was admitted as a barrister in New South Wales in 1979 and has served on many committees and tribunals associated with dentistry. He was elected to the Board in 1987 and appointed President from 1988. Dr Dale resigned as President effective 6 November 2007, however he will serve out his term on the Board as a member. He has been involved in part-time teaching at the University of Sydney since 1964 and holds the position of Adjunct Associate Professor. He was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1991 and an Officer (AO) in 2002 for his services to the dental profession and the community. He serves on the Board’s Education and Qualifications Committee. |

Ms Karen Crawshaw BA, LLB
Holds bachelor degrees in arts and law. Admitted to the NSW Supreme Court in 1979 and subsequently to the High Court. Holds an unrestricted practising certificate from the Law Society of NSW. Ms Crawshaw held legal positions in the State Crown Solicitor’s Office and the Premier’s Department prior to joining the NSW Department of Health’s Legal Branch. Ms Crawshaw took up the position of Director Legal NSW Health in 1991. This role was subsequently expanded and, as Director Employee Relations, Legal and Legislation and General Counsel, included primary responsibility for NSW Health's legal services, the Legislative Program for the Health portfolio, and industrial relations and human resource policy for the NSW public health system. In 2007 Ms Crawshaw was appointed Deputy Director-General Health System Support. Her areas of accountability for NSW Health are coporate governance and risk management, financial budgeting and management, asset management, contracting and procurement, corporate and business services, legal and legislative services and the health workforce. |

Dr John E Highfield Adj Associate Professor University of Sydney, BDS, DDS(Tor), MSc(London), FICD
John is a specialist periodontist in the Sydney CBD. He is the convenor of the Education and Qualifications Committee of the Board, and is a Director of the Australian Dental Council. He was in general dental practice for 12 years before specializing and for 26 years was in half time periodontal practice and had a half time academic appointment with the University of Sydney were he was Head of the Discipline of Periodontics until 2003. He now teaches undergraduate and graduate students in an adjunct appointment. Over the years he has been involved in numerous dental societies and at an executive level with the Australian and new Zealand Academy of Periodontists, The Australian Society of Periodontology, The Dental Alumni Society of the University of Sydney and the Dental Health Foundation as well as being involved in the examination of overseas trained dentists and is chief examiner for the Dental Board in dental hygiene. |

Dr Anna Enno BDS
Anna grew up in the Snowy Mountains and graduated from the University of Sydney with a BDS in 1974. She spent one year working at the Institute of Dental Research in Sydney completing a study on the fluoride content of bottled beverages. After tutoring in the Preventive Dentistry Department of the University of Sydney for two years, she traveled to London via Asia and worked in the United Kingdom until 1979. Anna has now settled in Newcastle and has worked as a General Practitioner for the last twenty-five years. She is an active member of the Newcastle Division of the Australian Dental Association and has tutored intermittently for the University of Sydney Dental Faculty and for the Newcastle T.A.F.E Dental Assistants’ course. Anna is married with two sons.

Professor Iven Klineberg AM
RFD, BSc, MDS, PhD (Lond), FICD. FDSRCS (Lond, Edin)
Educated at North Sydney Boys High School and The University of Sydney. Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) with Honours in 1963; Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in 1966; and Bachelor of Science (BSc) in 1968 as a Dental Health Education and Research Foundation Scholar. Awarded a Fellowship at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Department of Applied Physiology and completed a PhD and Surgical Fellowship (FDSRCS) in 1971. Returned to the University of Sydney in 1972 as an NH&MRC Fellow, Department of Prosthodontics. Established a practice devoted to prosthodontics which became full-time from 1973. Appointed Visiting Associate Professor, Department of Occlusion, University of Michigan from 1977 – 1978, and Inaugural Chair of Oral Rehabilitation and Head of Prosthodontics in The University of Sydney from 1978. Appointed Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Sydney in 1992 to 1998 and in 2003 and 2004. Clinical and research interests in prosthodontics include: orofacial pain and TMD diagnosis and management and implant rehabilitation. |

Mrs Virginia von Faber-Castell RDH
Assoc. Degree in Dental Hygiene
Mrs Virginia Faber-Castell graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Hygiene in 1968, and after two years of working in private practice in Pennsylvania and Florida, traveled to work in Zurich, Switzerland in the research department of the Dental School under the supervision of Professor Hans Muehlemann. In 1971 she immigrated to Sydney, Australia where she still resides with her husband and family. A Founding Member of the Dental Hygienists' Association of Australia, NSW, Virginia has served as International Co-ordinator, Treasurer and Chairman of the Continuing Education Committee, as well as having worked in private practice over a number of years. She is currently a Clinical Tutor at the University of Newcastle's Bachelor of Oral Health program. |

Ad/Associate Professor Chris Griffiths AM RFD
Chris Griffiths is a Dental Staff Specialist at the Westmead Centre for Oral Health Westmead Hospital. Chris works mainly in the area of Forensic Odontologist; however he does have a clinical role as a member of the Multi-Disciplinary team in the Head and Neck Clinic, Department of Radiation Oncology. Chris has also spent 44 years in the Australian Air Force, approximately half fulltime and the rest in the reserve. He currently holds the rank of substantive Air Commodore in the RAAF Specialist Reserve.

Dr David G Sykes BDS (London), MDS(Syd), LDSRCS(Eng), FRACDS
Dr Sykes gained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of London in 1975, was awarded a Fellowship by examination of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in 1985 and gained a Masters degree in Dental Surgery from the University of Sydney in 1988. He was listed as a Specialist Prosthodontist by the Dental Board of New South Wales in 1989 and practices as such in Sydney to date. He served as President of the Australian Dental Association (New South Wales Branch) and as Chair of the Defence Committee that administered the medical indemnity scheme on behalf of ADA members. He has been an elected member of the Dental Board of New South Wales since 1995 and has also served on the Regional Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. He holds an appointment as Senior Clinical Associate at the University of Sydney involved in the postgraduate prosthodontic training programme and is a Reserve Officer in the Royal Australian Navy. |

Ms Norah McGuire
Norah McGuire is a past President of the Combined Pensioners and Superannuants Association of New South Wales. She has worked for, and represented, consumers in a number of areas including health, housing income security and community services. Over the past twenty years Norah has represented consumers and the community on numerous boards and committees including the Social Security Advisory Council and the Health Participation Council. |

Mr Charles Vandervord LLB
Charles Vandervord is a Senior Consultant with TressCox Lawyers. Over the last twenty years Charles has served on numerous Committees including Personal Injury Committee of the Law Society of NSW and Personal Injury and Task Force Committees of the Law Council of Australia. He is currently the Acting Deputy Chairperson of the Serious Offenders Review Council and Deputy President of the Mental Health Review Tribunal. Charles has also assisted in drafting legislative change at a State level and appeared at Senate Sub-committee enquiry, as well as appearing at two Federal enquiries in relation to a proposed National Workers Compensation Scheme. |
