Functions of the Board

The Board is established under the Dental Practice Act 2001. The functions of the Dental Board are detailed in the Dental Practice Act 2001. They include:

  • To protect public health and safety
  • The maintenance and promotion of professional standards of dental practice in New South Wales
  • To register Dentists, Dental Students, Dental Hygienists and Therapists
  • To investigate complaints lodged under Section 44 Dental Practice Act 2001
  • To administer professional conduct issues and disciplinary functions
There are approximately 4,355 registered dentists, 250 Dental Therapists, 175 Dental Hygienists and 22 registered as both Dental Therapist and Dental Hygienist in New South Wales. The Dental Board meets monthly, normally on the first Friday of the month. The Board requires that any material to be considered at a formal meeting of the Board must be lodged in the Board’s office at least seven days before the meeting. This is to enable the material to be added to the meeting agenda, which is circulated to members one week in advance of the meetings.
