Welcome to the Dental Board of New South Wales website.
Our goal is to provide up-to-date
information on various topics related to the practice of dentistry in NSW.
We hope you find this information helpful and invite you to check out our
website often.
The birth of the dental
profession in New South Wales occurred on 1 January 1901, when the
Dentists Act became operative. Prior to this time, there were no laws
governing the practice of dentistry in New South Wales. Any person could
set up in dental practice. However, there were some dentists trained in
England who were in practice in the then colony, and these people worked
hard to lay the groundwork for a dental school and to establish the
practice of dentistry on a professional basis. The Dentists Act provided
for the licensing of dental practitioners who presented evidence of their
qualification to a Board created for the purpose by the Act. The ultimate responsibility of the Board is to
safeguard the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of NSW by
ensuring that those individuals licensed to provide dental services in the
state are duly qualified.
For dentists, dental hygienists and
dental therapists seeking licensure in the State of New South Wales,
application forms are included along
with links to the Dental Practice Act 2001 and the Dental Practice
Regulation 2004. The Board and administrative staff, hope this web
site will prove to be a useful tool for both the public and the dental
profession.
